Spirit of the Sea Festival this weekend in White Rock

The Spirit of the Sea Festival is on this weekend in White Rock. There is free parking at Semiahmoo Secondary on 148th Street and about 18th Avenue. Free bus rides down to the beach.

I only bring it up because tonight, July 31, is the Torchlight Parade, one of the funniest parades in existence but I don't think they mean it to be funny! I always enjoy the hecklers, mostly yelling at the entrants to speed it up. The parade starts at 9pm on Marine Drive at Oxford Street and ends down by Semiahmoo Park. It only seems longer!

The fireworks are on Sunay night. More information at their web page. http://www.spiritofthesea.ca

White Rock Outdoor Movie night July 30 2010

Free outdoor movie event in White Rock on July 30 taking place at the East Beach at the far end near the Sandpiper. Starting around 9pm is an Elvis Presley oldie - Blue Hawaii. Bring a chair or a blanket and a snack. Maybe a sweater. Kind of cools down a bit in the evening. Movie lasts around an hour and a half.

Eagle swooping in

On Friday morning about 8am I was driving westbound on 40th Avenue, around 160th Street, and I spotted an eagle soaring in the sky trying to avoid two crows that were intent on pestering it. As I drove nearer I decided the two pesky birds were actually hawks. The the eagle swooped straight down to the road in front of me so I slowed down in case it came to a stop in front of my car. Instead its destination seemed to be the eastbound lane beside me. I watched its talons extend and it snatched something up from the road and took to the air again. I looked closely and it appeared to be a rodent in the eagle's grasp. I suppose the eagle plucked a mouse or rat from a farmer's field, took to the air, and then dropped it on the road to kill it, and then swooped down to grab its breakfast. I'm not sure when the rodent was dropped, before or after the hawk's intervention. It was an interesting sight, something rarely seen as the wildlife gets pushed out of Cloverdale with all the development.

On Thursday afternoon I was driving along Crescent Road and a deer emerged from some bushes at the side of the road. The doe stood there for a few moments and then returned to the yard she had come from.

When I was younger deer were a common sight around Cloverdale and the South Surrey area.

Internet modem not working :(

On Tuesday our Internet modem stopped working. We called Telus and after a walk through they determined it was toast and they'd send a new one in 4 to 5 business days.

So we're effectively without Internet. Here it is Thursday and I decide I should find a place with WiFi and check my email. In the past when we've had connection problems I've taken my laptop to the Wired Monk on the hill above Cloverdale, the little strip mall on 64th Avenue and 184th Street but I decided to try the other location in Cloverdale on the corner of 168th Street and 60th Avenue. I've been there in the past for drinks but never taken my laptop so I wasn't sure if they offer wireless Internet there but it doesn't hurt to check. I still don't have the answer. I turned into the parking lot to be greeted by a sign saying due to a burst pipe and cleaning the mess they are closed right now. OK, so off I go to the Monk on the hill.

Had my heart set on a strawberry Italian Soda but changed my mind when I got here and ordered a Creamsicle drink instead. Kind of wish I'd gone with my first choice. Oh, well. May end up getting one this weekend if my new modem doesn't show up tomorrow.

Local Berries

So far this year I haven't had much luck at buying local berries around Cloverdale. I like Kraus Berry Farms out in the Otter area of Langley. They're usually big, juicy, sweet berries and at a premium price. But quality is worth it. I'm not out in that area often so I have to make a special trip.

I notice the Blueberry Store on 152 Street is now open, though I haven't stopped in there yet this year. Its on the east side of 152, about a couple of blocks south of the railway tracks at Colebrook Road. I've often pulled in there when stopped by a train. They have decent blueberries and often other berries and produce that are in season. Therefore they are only open a couple of months of the year in the summer.

Last week I stopped at Surrey Farms on the corner of 152 and Colebrook. They often have flats of blueberries and raspberries at $9.99. I bought a flat of blueberries for $9.99, a carton of strawberries for $7 (Yikes!) and a couple of pounds of Okanagan cherries that worked out to just over $6. Kerry likes them so I wanted to get him a treat. The cherries are good.

The blueberries weren't bad. Its the beginning of their season and they're not sweet and big and juicy the way I like. I ate some and froze about the majority. They'll be good for baking over the winter.

The strawberries I bought only because someone I know bought some there and said they were pretty good. I didn't like them. They weren't that big, were more white inside than red, more tart than sweet, and kind of tired looking even though they were picked that morning. By the 2nd day in my fridge they were already starting to turn. I turned them into strawberry smoothies and they were OK but I won't be buying any more strawberries here.

There are several signs up for blueberries for sale on the outskirts of Cloverdale along 152 Street, 168th Street, and 184th Street, among other places. These are farmers selling their berries on tables set up in their driveway or in booths on their front lawn. All cash sales. Occasionally I stop at some of them but more often than not I'm not carrying cash on me. I really need to make it a point to have a couple of tens on me during the summer months of driving around.

Mr. Mikes

Does everyone remember going to the Mr. Mikes steakhouse on Logan Avenue in Langley many years ago? Remember having a Mikeburger or their salad bar?

That restaurant is long gone but we've found a few in towns further north over the years such as Cache Creek, Quesnel, and Kamloops. I remember eating breakfast at the Mr Mikes in Cache Creek many years ago when my father and I were transporting my horse back down to the coast.

Then Mr. Mikes opened up again in Langley in the old Kelsey's restaurant on 200th Street and Willowbrook Drive. We went there for dinner a few months ago to give it a try. Its not a thing like the old Mr. Mikes. No salad bar and practically nothing for a vegetarian to eat. Nice enough restaurant and staff but no reason to keep me coming back here.

But for those of you who do remember enjoying a Mikeburger at the original Mr. Mikes, make a point of heading to their restaurant tomorrow, Sunday July 18, 2010. For one day only the original Mikeburger can be yours for $5.99. I do remember liking them as a kid back in the olden days when I ate meat! The closest restaurant is in Langley at 20020 Willowbrook Drive next to the Tim Hortons.

Surrey Leader delivery

Yesterday I received another elusive Surrey leader. In fact I received one this past Wednesday too. That makes more Surrey Leaders received in one week than the rest of the year put together. I saw yesterday's Leader in the mailbox when I was taking the dogs for a walk but I actually ran into the fellow delivering them just down the block and stopped to chat. I asked him if he was new and he said no. His route is in a different Cloverdale neighborhood and he said he's the substitute delivery person. He confirmed his first delivery to our neighborhood was last Friday. I told him that's the first Surrey Leader I've seen since January. He was quite surprised and pulled a little street and house map out of his pocket and asked where I lived. I pointed to my house, the house number is clearly marked on the delivery route. I said I just assumed there'd been no delivery person in our area because from time to time I get a notice in my mailbox that they're looking for paper carriers. He said something's not right. He asked if I'd complained about not receiving a paper and I said no. Its really no big deal to me one way or the other if I get one and I just figured there was no one assigned our route for the past few months.

I can figure this one out. Its happened plenty of times. The delivery person is dumping the newspapers somewhere instead of delivering them. Its quicker that way. And most likely why this person is out of a job. Someone on our neighborhood who actually likes reading the Surrey Leader must have complained they haven't been receiving them. Oh well. Wasn't me. Let's see how long it keeps up.

Weekend late night specials at Il Uk Jo all you can eat sushi

We got a nice surprise tonight when we went to our favorite all you can eat sushi restaurant Il Uk Jo in Fleetwood. Regular price is $20.99. We've been busy this week with work and it was just after 9pm when we arrived at the restaurant. The hostess asked us if we'd be having the late night all you can eat special of $13.99 so we said sure. Savings of $14 for the 2 of us right there. The late night all you can eat sushi has a slightly different menu but pretty much everything we order all the time anyway was on it so no big deal. The only noticeable exceptions were the prawn tempura and dragon roll, but hey we can skip those for the savings. Kerry was hungry tonight so they probably didn't make much profit on us! But we decided the savings was significant enough that we'll be returning more often on our Friday night date nights and waiting till after 9pm to dine.

Unfortunately this is only a summer special. :(

For those who haven't been before Il Uk Jo all you can eat sushi and Korean BBQ is located in Fleetwood on the southwest corner of the Fraser Highway and 152 Street in a small strip mall shopping plaza. Park behind the restaurant.

Cloverdale Banana Bread

I am not a banana bread fan. I like bananas. I buy them frequently, peel them and eat them. I just don't like them cooked.

Everytime I go to the produce store I buy a hand of bananas. Sometimes they get eaten before they turn brown. Sometimes not. They turn, I toss them in the garbage. What a waste.

And then one day I get to thinking. Just because I don't like banana bread doesn't mean that Kerry doesn't like banana bread. Maybe I can find a better use for those over-ripe bananas than letting them rot in the landfill. I've tried a few variations of banana bread recipe and I've come up with a pretty decent one that's easy to make. I've never actually eaten it myself. Kerry loves it and it doesn't last long once its out of the oven.

I call it Cloverdale Banana Bread, for no other reason than I live in Cloverdale and here's where I perfected the recipe.

1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup margarine
2 eggs
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
over ripe bananas - depends on how many I have, usually anywhere from 3 to 4 bananas

And there you have it. Ingredients that I usually have in the house around the same time the bananas are going bad. For the eggs, I buy farm fresh ones and often they are jumbo size, meaning I have 2 yolks in one egg. If that's what you use too, then only use one jumbo egg instead of 2 eggs.

Now for the fun part, the optional stuff. The above recipe stands on its own but Kerry likes a bit of variety so I might toss in a couple of handfuls of walnut pieces if I have them in the cupboard. Sometimes I'll shake in some cinnamon and pumpkin spice, but I guess other sweet spices like nutmeg would work in this recipe.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream the sugars and margarine in a mixer at medium speed or wherever you're comfortable at where the ingredients don't splash out of the bowl. Add eggs and mix well. Mash the bananas and add them to the bowl. Mix in the flour and baking soda. If you're planning to add any optional items, put them in now too. Pour into a bread loaf pan that's sprayed with baking spray and bake for an hour and then check with a toothpick to see if its done. If the batter sticks to the toothpick put it in for another 5 minutes and check again. With my oven I usually find the bread is ready somewhere between one hour and five minutes and ten minutes but other ovens may differ in their heating. Put it on a wire rack to cool.

And here's where Kerry takes over. At some point he knocks the loaf out of the pan and transfers it onto a plate and then he eats it. Not all at once of course, but it doesn't last long. Now he happily informs me whenever the bananas are getting too ripe that its time to bake banana bread. Like today. With all the heat we've been having those green bananas I bought 3 or 4 days ago ripened really fast. I ate one yesterday and it was already past the stage that I like to eat them.

Enjoy!

Stinging Nettles

When I was growing up in Cloverdale we had a lot of bushes to play in. Stinging nettles grow abundantly all over the province and the ditches and woods around Cloverdale were full of them. By 5 years old I knew what a stinging nettle was and to avoid them. Live and learn. Stinging nettles form bumps on the skin that itch and sting for quite some time if you come in contact with them.

Tonight we were out at the farm with a friend in his mid-30's. He returned to his car to get the camera and when he rejoined us he said he touched a plant and now has hives and they hurt. I took a look at his arms and those hives looked like he'd been in contact with stinging nettles. I spotted some nearby and pointed to them and he said that was the plant.

What I can't figure out is how he got this far along in life without ever coming in contact with a stinging nettle or knowing what they are.

Free Slurpees at Cloverdale 7-11 on Sunday July 11

In a birthday promotion across the states and Canada, 7-11 is giving away 1000 free slurpees on Sunday July 11, 2010. They come in a special birthday container.

Does everyone get this? 7-11 is the name of the store. 7 11 is the date of the birthday. And how much does each Slurpee weigh? Could it be 7.11 ounces?

Here's the promo on their website. www.slurpee.ca/promos/7-eleven-day

Nowhere does it say the time the promotion starts. For all I know the promo begins at 1 minute past midnight. Only 1000 Slurpees per store. I guess when those birthday cups are gone you're paying for your Slurpees.

The 7-11 in Cloverdale is on the corner of 176th Street and 60th Avenue, across from the fairgrounds.

Hillcrest Booster Juice BOGO this afternoon

Today, Saturday July 10, the new Booster Juice in the Hillcrest shopping plaza in the Clayton area is having its grand opening. Between 11am and 5pm today they are having a buy one get one free smoothie. Seeing as how their smoothies usually run between $5 and $6 this is a pretty good deal. In this heat smoothies make an excellent choice for a meal substitute. And if you haven't had one of Booster Juice's smoothies before, they are a meal in themselves.

The Hillcrest shopping plaza is on the south side of the Fraser Highway and approximately 188th Street. There's a Price Smart Foods and Tim Hortons in this plaza. Booster Juice is located at the west end of the plaza near the new cupcake store. Unit 109 - 18640 Fraser Hwy.

The other closest Booster Juice to Cloverdale is in the Panorama Village on Highway 10 and 152, but don't head there today for the BOGO because their smoothies are regular priced.

Rare delivery of a Surrey Leader

Hmm, one of those elusive Surrey Leaders showed up in my mailbox today. I think the last time I received one was back in January. I wonder if they've hired a new delivery person in Cloverdale. Too good to last....

Hot Air Balloon over Cloverdale tonight

I saw the first Remax hot air balloon hovering over Cloverdale tonight while driving home. Fortunately my Border Collie, Lacy, who was riding in the back seat did not spot it. She barks like crazy whenever a balloon is in the air, sometimes while I'm driving. Nothing like getting a bunch of woofs in the ear.

I've never been interested in going for a balloon ride though my husband has brought it up a couple of times over the years. After the tragic hot air balloon accident south of Cloverdale in Hazelmere three years ago you'll never get me in one of those balloons now. My husband actually was visiting a friend about half a mile away at the time the balloon caught on fire and saw some of the event unfolding in front of him. Needless to say he's never again brought up the subject of taking a flight in one of those balloons.

Different hours at Greenaway Pool

A couple of days ago we were driving past Greenaway Park around 1 or 2 in the afternoon. We noticed a lot of people in the swimming pool and a bunch of people lined up around the fence. We kind of wondered what was going on because it didn't look like anything structured like swimming lessons were going on. We wondered if the pool was at capacity and the people lining up had to wait until some swimmers left. Also the pool was open earlier than I noted in a blog last month. I double checked the City of Surrey's website, link is on that other blog, and indeed the hours have changed so they are open early afternoon.

This morning I was talking to my neighbor who sometimes brings his daughters to swim there and I told him the hours seem to be hit and miss and he agreed that is true. Whether its because someone hasn't shown up for work to open the pool or during hotter weather they open it if there's available staff he wasn't sure. But he knew about the line up. You get half an hour to swim and then you go outside and line up to come back into the pool if you still want to go swimming. He doesn't like going there because Greenaway Pool is so cold and doesn't like having the half hour line ups to swim.

I told him that pool was ice cold when I was a kid and we didn't line up for it back then. Quite the opposite. I begged my mother not to let me swim in that pool because I swore a dump truck had just poured in a load of ice cubes.

Due to the tennis court construction at Greenaway Park, pool patrons are being told to park in the east end of the Fraser Downs parking lot.

Playing at the Clova from July 9 - July 15 2010

This coming week at the Clova from July 9 to the 15th is:

7pm - Despicable Me

This movie premieres everywhere this Friday and keeping in tradition of first runs at the Clova this is the only show playing this week. Seeing as how their agreement for first runs is 2 weeks and not playing any other movies during this time I can be pretty sure this movie will be playing through to July 22. Movie lets out at 8:35pm so this will be an early night at the movies.

Note the new prices at the Clova. Admission is $8. If there are 2 people in your group the price is $15. Add an extra $4 to the admission for each extra person in your party. New prices for refills on popcorn and drinks. Bring your own reusable container from home and fill up for $2.50.

Homemade Orange Julius recipe

With the current heat wave everyone is looking for ways to cool off. I have my own version of an Orange Julius that is a refreshing treat.

Put into a blender in no particular order:

1 cup milk
1 cup water
half a can of orange juice concentrate
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup icing sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
about 9 or 10 ice cubes

Turn the blender on high speed for half a minute or so. Makes about 3 glasses. Very nice. Saves spending $5 at the mall.

Saturday, July 3, 2010

Prince increase at the Clova

I was walking my dogs through Cloverdale this morning and spotted a new sign in the window at the Clova Theatre. Bottom line is the prices have increased, undoubtedly thanks to the HST that came in a couple of days ago.

Admission is now $8.

However, if there are 2 people in your party, price is $15.

If there are 3 people in your group, the total is $19.

For each additional person add $4.

Thursday, July 1, 2010

Playing at the Clova from July 2 - July 8 2010

Yup, that's it. No second feature. Movie lets out at 9:10pm. Admission is $7 or $4 on Tuesday. Bring your own reusable drink or popcorn container and fill up for $2 at the concession.
