I keep forgetting to post an update that Cloverdale has a new dollar store, not too far from where the old dollar store was in the Clover Square Village, Highway 10 and 177B Street.
Dollarama has opened in the same building block where the old dollar store used to be, but not the same space. Dollarama is in space where the old antique mall used to be, the last shop in that building's block.

Cloverdale Rodeo weekend May 17 - 20, 2013
It's that time of the year again when Cloverdale comes alive with a rodeo, fairgrounds rides, animal expos, and vendors hawking their wares. If you've ever dreamed of being a cowboy or cowgirl or just like watching them in action, the Cloverdale Rodeo and Fair is on from May 17th to 20th, 2013.
Here's a rundown for what to expect and for more information you can go to the Cloverdale Rodeo website http://www.cloverdalerodeo.com/
Actually the events start one day in advance on Thursday May 16 with the Cloverdale bed races taking place on 176A Street between 57th and 58th Avenues and a bike parade from 5pm to 7pm.
On Friday May 17th come to the Clover Square Village - corner of 177B Street and Highway 10 - for the chili cook off 4:30pm to 6:30pm. Sampling and voting is free. There are singers up on the stage to entertain the audience.
Cloverdale Rodeo Parade is on Saturday morning May 18th starting at 10am depends where you are for viewing it. The parade entries set up between 56A and 58th Avenues east of 176A Street, and if they're following the pattern they do every year, they get into formation along 177B Street and head south to Highway 10. They turn right (west) on Highway 10 where half the highway has been blocked to vehicle traffic and then turns right (north) down 176th Street. The parade goes all the way down to 58A Avenue then turns right, and then left onto 176A Street back towards the fairgrounds and just kind of ends along this stretch.
I heard that the free trolley rides are going on Saturday and Sunday but I haven't been able to find out for sure yet. Normally it runs between Clover Square Village, Hawthorne Square in downtown Cloverdale, Clover Crossing Mall, and Clayton Hill Mall. If I find out if the trolley will be back I'll post it here.
I'll have some more posts coming soon about where to park in Cloverdale and pancake breakfasts.

Cloverdale Chili Cook Off
Cloverdale will be hosting a pre-rodeo event - the chili cook off - on Friday May 18 2012 in the Clover Square Village on the corner of Highway 10 and 177B Street.
Several groups will be cooking up batches of chili and offering samples. Testing is free but they ask you to vote for the group you thought cooked the best chili. You can also fill out an entry form and win prizes donated by Cloverdale merchants. If you enter the draw you have to be there when they draw to win a prize or you are out of luck so plan on sticking around to about 7pm to see if you're a lucky winner.
Between 4:30pm and 6:30pm there will also be live music. Parking may be a bit tricky because much of the parking lot is taken over by the groups setting up for the chili cook off. Try entering on the west side of the mall where the old Rogers Video used to be next to the Clydesdale Inn. There is parking behing the mall, behind where IGA is.

No Dollar Store in Cloverdale :(
Lucky Loonies has been part of the Clover Square Village since the strip mall opened about 8 or 10 years ago on the corner of Highway 10 and 177B Street. I know I've been in there throughout the years to pick up a few things. For some reason I can always find baggies there when I can't find them at Price Smart or London Drugs.
What's up with baggies anyway? I cram a few into my pockets because I walk my dogs all over Cloverdale and have to clean up after them. I go to Price Smart or London Drugs and half the time they aren't on the shelf. I just want the regular flip flop fold the top. I don't care about the brand. Generic or name brand. Whatever. Its just going to get flushed down the toilet when I get home. What I do not want or the zipper lock bags that seem to be the only thing on the shelves whenever I go shopping. Even at Walmart - same problem. I do not need to spend extra money on a zip lock when its only going to get flushed with its contents when I get home from walking the dogs.
So after an unsucessful buying mission at London Drugs and Price Smart a few weeks ago I went over to Lucky Loonies. They had a sign out saying 30% off everything in the store. Sounds good. Instead of buying a couple of boxes of baggies I bought 6. I even bought a chocolate bar! I asked the clerk what was up with the sale. Were they going out of business? Nope. Just spring cleaning, wanted to unload inventory and restock.
We stopped by this past weekend and now there's a sign on Lucky Loonies saying 50% off, closing out sale. Oh no! I rush down the aisle where the baggies are kept and the shelves are bare. Gee if I want bare shelves I can go to Price Smart! Most of the shelves were very sparse so I'm guessing they are closing their doors for good at the end of April.
Too bad. That's another Cloverdale business gone by the wayside and several people who are finding themselves without a job.

Clean your sidewalks
Surrey bylaws say that sidewalks must be cleaned by 10am excluding Sundays if there's been a snowfall.
My husband loves playing with the snowblower. Not only does he get the sidewalk in front of our house cleared, he goes a block up the street in each direction. And if he notices someone needs their driveway cleaned he goes in. Just loves playing with that toy. He had it out twice yesterday. Once before 10am and then in the afternoon about 4 hours later but we'd already had a lot of snow fall during that gap.
I just came back from walking my dog through Cloverdale so I could pick my car up at the mechanic's. Here's what I noticed. The shopkeepers on 176th Street have their sidewalks clear. The deserted Cloverdale Mall, that is owned by the City of Surrey, is full of icy slush. NO city crews showed up to clear the sidewalks. On Highway 10 in front of the Clover Square Village the sidewalks are not cleared of snow and ice and its already 11am on the day following a snowfall. Now I'd think that the property management company is responsible for the sidewalks bordering Highway 10 rather than the few businesses who happen to be situated closer to the road than the others such as Dairy Queen, Coast Capital, Chevron and Salty's.
Continuing down the sidewalk none of the businesses had their sidewalks cleared of snow and ice and slush. That would be A & W, Ricky's, Lordco, Tim Hortons, McDonald's, etc. Now whether the employees/management of these stores are responsible or whether or not they lease their buildings and the owner or property management company is responsible I don't know. But its a dangerous situation. Its disrespectful to the citizens of Cloverdale and disrespectful to the city of Surrey not to abide by the law. Snow removal law is the same in most cities in the Greater Vancouver Area. If you don't want to shovel snow the city of Surrey's website lists contractors who will come to your house or business and take care of clearing driveways and sidewalks. Or check Craigslist. There are many enterprising persons with snow shovels or snow blowers who can be hired to take care of snow clearing.

Salty's Fish and Chips coming to Cloverdale
There's a building in the northeast section of the Clover Square Village on 177B Street and Highway 10 and I see a sign on it that Salty's Fish and Chips is opening soon.
I'm assuming Salty's may be a franchise because I've eaten at the one in White Rock.
Is it a good thing to be coming to Cloverdale? There already is a fish and chips place downtown on 176th Street across from the Clova Theater - Sea Shanty. So, yes Cloverdale could probably use another fish and chips place, that's not the reason I'm questioning them.
Its the building they're moving to. Right now half of the building is the UPS store - courier and mailbox rentals. The side that Salty's is moving to has been the kiss of death for many restaurants over the past 10 years or so since its built.
Originally it was a donut shop, this was a few years before Tim Hortons came to town. I don't remember the name, an independent franchise. It closed down and another donut shop opened, this one a franchise, again the name escapes me but it might have been Robin's Donuts. I remember going in there one night around 10pm and they didn't have any donuts. All they had was coffee. "Come back around 2am," said the cashier. "The baker will be on shift and there will be donuts."
Yeah, I'll get that right on that and set my alarm to wake me up in a couple of hours so I can go back for donuts. I mean is it just me but when a business has "donuts" as part of their name, is it unreasonable to expect to go in during their business hours and purchase, say, donuts? I remember we ended up driving to Langley to buy donuts from Tim Hortons.
That may have been its demise if everytime customers went in to buy donuts and they were out so people went elsewhere and never returned. Ever hear of consumer confidence?
Its been a variety of restaurants over the years. Among others I remember an Indian restaurant, a sushi restaurant, and most recently a Bread Garden. Those are the ones I remember but never was a customer.
Its kind of a bad location. You have to drive through the Chevron gas station to get to it. It gets overlooked by people who see a variety of restaurants ahead in the next block or so: A & W, Ricky's, Tim Hortons, McDonald's, Wendy's, Starbucks.
I like fish and chips. Maybe I'll come down one night and check it out. I wish them luck staying open. They're going to need it. That place has been the kiss of death for every other eating establishment that's tried to make a go of it over the years.

Cloverdale Chili Cook Off
We went down to Clover Square tonight to check out the chili cook off contest. We arrived at 5:30pm and voting ballots had to be turned in by 6pm. I'm a vegetarian so I was unable to taste and vote but Kerry was quite happy to sample chili from the various chefs. Some of the companies taking part were: Rusty's, IGA, Rockwell's, Kevin Falcon MLA's office, ICBC, Fraser Downs, Shoppers Drug Mart, Antique Mall. Kerry liked them all but thought Rockwell's chili had a memorable taste so he voted for them. He liked the chili from Kevin Falcon's because it included a small dollop of sour cream. I liked them best only because they had chocolate chip cookies out and I managed to eat one about one minute before they ran out. Speaking of running out, several of the competitors had run out of chili before we arrived.
A band played in the parking lot and we waited while the votes were tallied to see who had one. Also wanted to be around in case Kerry's name was drawn for a prize. Apparently it was a runaway decision. The winner of Cloverdale's 2010 chili cook off is ---- Kevin Falcon's office.

More events happening in Cloverdale May 2010 long weekend
I've just returned from a 3 week vacation and I have a few more additions to my previous post about what's happening around Cloverdale this May 2010.
To start off I still have been unable to find a map of the Cloverdale Rodeo Parade route, so I'm sticking with what I said before and hoping its staying to the same route. To be safe, find a spot on 176th Street between 58th and 57th Avenues. I'm pretty sure the parade is starting somewhere around 56A Avenue and 177B Street - the staging area. Parade proceeds south along 177B Street while everyone gets in line to Highway 10. Which means that the west bound lanes of traffic are closed and all traffic is diverted to the eastbound lane. Then its a couple of blocks west to 176th Street, north until 58A Avenue, then north again on 176A Street where the parade peters out by the time it reaches 60th Avenue and the fairgrounds.
Friday, May 21 - 4:30pm to 6pm its the Chili Cook off at the Clover Square Village on the south side of Highway 10 and 177B Street. Chili is free for the testing and voting. Sometimes free comes with a price and you have to listen to the chef's political agenda.
Saturday, May 22 - 8am to 10am is a rodeo pancake breakfast in Hawthorne Square on 176th Street across from the Clova Theatre. This is put on by the Cloverale Lions. Live music with Cloverdale's own Trailer Park Playboys.
Saturday, May 22 - 8:30am to 10am is another rodeo pancake breakfast, and this one is my personal favorite because its free. Its held at the Cloverdale Canadian Reformed Church at 17473 60th Avenue.
Saturday, May 22 - 1:30pm the Clova Theatre is hosting a vaudeville act Susie Francis and the Versatiles. Tickets are $5. This will be repeated on Sunday May 23 and Monday May 24, same time, same place, same act.
There are all kinds of activities happening in Cloverdale in conjunction with the rodeo. For more information see their web page. Olympic torch in Cloverdale
The Olympic torch relay stopped briefly in Cloverdale today - Monday February 8 - around 2:30. We decided to walk over to Highway 10 for a look. Us and a few thousand others!
Several vehicles that were part of the torch program came along first including some of the sponsors. Also buses that were transporting the runners to drop them off where they'd be running.
We walked up to a spot in front of Maynard's tack store, halfway between the musem and 177B Street. Oddly enough a lot of people were standing on the opposite side of the road alongside Clover Square Village. I thought it might be hard for them to see because traffic was moving east bound along Highway 10 thus blocking their view.
Traffic continued west bound for awhile and then became one lane only. Then it came to a complete halt somewhere up around 180th Street. I'm not sure if the police were redirecting traffic down there and up 58th Avenue or if they came to a standstill for ten minutes or so. But I know that eastbound traffic on Highway 10 came to a complete standstill. The police would not let them proceed past 177B Street and all the pedestrians on the mall side wound inbetween the stopped traffic to get a better view of the torch bearer.
I managed to get one of the coveted 2010 Olympics edition of Coke Zero. Several people from the Coke truck were passing them out, but they can only hold a couple at a time, and the crowds were so huge that very few people received one. I managed to get out on the street with my dogs and claim they were thirsty and I got one! Which Kerry promptly opened up and drank because he was thirsty! It might look like a bottle but its really an aluminum can.

Canada Post woes
Yesterday, September 30 2009, I arrived home to find a delivery notice from Canada Post. The Canada Post employee stopped by my house at 12:40 and I was home about an hour later. So I missed it fair and square. Can't be home all the time. I know its 4 paperback books I ordered from Chapters last week. Nothing urgent, but I'll be happy to start reading one of them soon. I kind of wondered why it wasn't just left in my mailbox, albeit sticking out a little, or else left in the gap between the storm door and the front door. I mean its 4 paperback books. How big a package can they come in?
My notice says to pick up after 1300 tomorrow. So that would make it today, Oct 1 after 1pm.
Today its raining but I took my dog, Lacy, and walked to the postal outlet in Shopper's Drug Mart at the Clover Square Village. I arrived at 2pm. The clerk looked at my card, punched the number into her computer, and said she didn't think my package was there. To her credit she went into the back room and searched and also went through some drawers behind her counter looking for it. Nope. Not there. She offered the explanation that the driver must not have dropped it off last night and suggested I phone after 7:30pm tonight and see if its shown up.
Gee, I sure hope the package does turn up. I'd hate to think its lost in action or some Canada Post employee is kicking up their feet and enjoying one of my novels.

Like I said its raining and being outside for over half an hour and now dealing with a wet dog all for nothing is not my idea of a fun way to spend the afternoon.

Gee, I sure hope the package does turn up. I'd hate to think its lost in action or some Canada Post employee is kicking up their feet and enjoying one of my novels.
It makes one wonder why did the Canada Post employee who left the card put on it to pick up after 1300 tomorrow if he or she was unable to meet that time frame? Like I said its raining and being outside for over half an hour and now dealing with a wet dog all for nothing is not my idea of a fun way to spend the afternoon.
Curling up with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate. Now I'm talking!

Coast Capital Savings Drive Thru ATM
Earlier today I had to go through the drive thru ATM at Coast Capital Savings in the Clover Square Village on the south side of Highway 10, next to the Dairy Queen. There were no cars in the drive thru but 2 women in their late 50's or early 60's standing there. One using the ATM, the other I assume was lining up behind her. Where I was stopped I could see into the lobby and there was one person using the ATM, no line up. OK, so this is a little weird, but no big deal. I personally would not be walking into the drive thru ATM at this particular location. In fact I wouldn't go here at all unless I was with someone else or had my dogs with me. And yes, today my dogs were in the car with me. On other occasions I've often walked inside this ATM lobby area with my dogs as I've done for many years at this location. The women obviously weren't together. One finished her transaction and left and then the second woman did her transaction.
About a month ago we went through this ATM drive thru at this Coast Capital Savings. It was early evening, just starting to get dark and we were in our Ford F-250 so pretty high up off the ground. We had our 2 dogs in the back seat. A blonde woman, appeared to be in her late 40's, suddenly appeared in front of the truck as Kerry was starting to pull away from the machine. His window was still down and he asked if he could help her. She asked him if he had a toonie so she could make a phone call. He said he did not and offered to let her use his cell phone. She declined and said that wouldn't work and wandered off.
OK, that's really weird. The last time I checked pay phones cost a quarter for a call. Whatever she needed the toonie for it wasn't a phone call. We drove through the parking lot and next we see two young men, late teens, walking from around the side of the branch. We wondered if they might be her accomplices. They then went to the far side of the ATM shelter where there are posts holding up the canopy and both of them leaned against the posts so if a car drove in they would not see them standing (hiding?) there. We stayed there watching them considering if we should call the police, but after half a minute, they walked away. The blonde woman was nowhere to be seen by this point.
I have no idea if they were working together or what they were up to but two or three days later I saw the blonde walking down 176th Street in Cloverdale, near 57 Avenue.
So always remember safety at ATM's whether its daytime or night. Be aware of the people around you if you're alone. Avoid entering an ATM lobby if a person is sleeping in there. Or otherwise hanging out in the lobby. And especially avoid the Coast Capital Savings ATM at the Clover Square Village unless you're with someone else or have your dogs with you for security. That might be a high traffic area on Highway 10 but it is isolated from the other shops in the mall and someone encountering difficulty might not be readily seen.
