I've managed to track down some pancake breakfasts that will be happening around Cloverdale, mostly before the parade starts on Saturday May 18.
Cloverdale Legion is serving up a pancake breakfast every day May 17 to 20th between 8am and 11:30am. Cost is $4.50 and includes pancakes, eggs, sausages, coffee, tea, and orange juice/drink. The legion is located at 17567 - 57th Avenue, across the street from the firehall.
The Lions are serving a pancake breakfast before the parade in Hawthorne Square on the west side of 176th Street, halfway between 57th and 58th Avenues from 8am to 11am on Saturday May 18. I'm not sure of the cost and other extra food being served, but last year it was $5.
So far I haven't been able to find out if the Cloverdale Canadian Reformed Church on 60th Avenue is having its popular pancake breakfast on Saturday morning before the parade. Usually someone stops by my blog and gives me a heads up but not yet. I'll update when I find out.
The Cloverdale United Church on the corner of 58th Avenue and the Cloverdale Bypass is having a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning before the parade, 8am to 10am. $5 for pancakes, sausages, coffee, tea, and juice.
**Updated** There is a sign outside the Cloverdale Canadian Reformed Church, 17473 - 60th Ave., that they'll be holding a free pancake breakfast on Saturday May 16 between 8am and 10am. In addition to pancakes they also serve sausages, eggs, coffee, tea, and juice.
A slice of life in Cloverdale, British Columbia. Blogs include events happening around Cloverdale and stories of what it was like growing up in Cloverdale.

What's happening in Cloverdale in August 2009?
Some events happening in Cloverdale in August:
August 8 2009 – Cloverdale Blueberry Festival. We always start the morning at the Cloverdale Legion enjoying their blueberry pancake breakfast. This is pancakes, eggs, sausage, and coffee and orange drink. And yes you can go back for seconds. All for $4/person. From about 7:30am to 11am. This will be a busy morning with many of the festival’s exhibitors in attendance. Along 176th Street is a Show N Shine with classic cars from the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. Get there early to enjoy the cars. Past experience is that the Blueberry Festival is usually very hot and sunny. The pavement gets hot and can become unbearable with the sun beating down. There will also be a pie eating contest, music, and the Legion has a BBQ from 5pm to 7pm
August 15 from 10:30am to about noon is a walking tour held at the Surrey Centre Cemetery on Old McLellan Road (60th Avenue). This is about a block west of 168th Street for those who haven’t been there before, across the street from Surrey Centre Elementary School. Cost is $10. Phone the Surrey Museum in Cloverdale to pre-register 604-592-6956. Sorry, I’m not sure what their hours of operation are, but if there’s no answer, they’re closed!
August 22 from 10am to about noon is another walking tour of downtown Cloverdale. Also $10 and pre-register at the Surrey Museum 604-592-6956.

Another Canada Day has passed
We started off Canada Day by going out to Kraus Berry Barms in Aldergrove for the free pancake breakfast. We rode our motorbikes out there. We arrived around 9:30am and the parking lot was already full of cars with several staff directing parking. Because we were on the motorbikes they parked us under a tree across from the store. Very nice. Then we stood in line for 20 minutes to get 2 pancakes topped with fresh raspberries and strawberry syrup. They were good, but they weren't worth the wait. We bought baskets of raspberries and strawberries, a loaf of cheese and asparagus, and raspberry shortcakes. All became part of our Canada Day dinner later on that evening. When we drove out the driveway was now packed with cars and there was no more room. People had to park on the street. There had to be more than a hundred cars on the property. Most of the people showed up with buckets in hand ready to pick their own berries after eating the pancakes. I'm sure Kraus made more money on July 1 than they will in the rest of the month put together. It was a great way to get lots of people to descend upon their farm, most of whom would be paying customers of some berry merchandise. But I think we'll pass next year on their Canada Day free pancakes.
The Cloverdale Millenium park had an estimated 125,000 people show up. We stayed well away from the intersection of 176th and 64th. At 10pm we drove up to Lord Tweedsmuir to watch the fireworks from the football field. We weren't the only ones with this idea. A lot of people were already there but there was plenty of parking. The fireworks were supposed to start at 10:15 but 10:35 was more like it. By that time we were being eaten alive by the mosquitoes and after about 5 minutes we headed back to the car, slowly so we could still watch. We were planning to drive back down 180th Street to 58th Avenue to head home, again trying to avoid the general area of the fairgrounds. By the time we left the police had blocked off traffic on 60th Avenue heading downhill towards Greenaway Park and the fairgrounds. The only options were to go up 60th or continue along 180th. I guess they wanted traffic to head to Highway 10 to get out of town, and bottom line that was probably the fastest way for the partygoers to go. We still had a pretty good view of the fireworks on the way home and we parked for awhile in the parking lot of the old Shop Easy. What do they call that grocery store now? Cloverdale Market? We could see the police were set up on the corner of 58th Avenue and the Cloverdale Bypass, so when the fireworks ended we drove alongside the old Cloverdale Mall and out 57th Avenue and home. No problem with traffic other than going a couple of blocks out of our way. One of the advantages of knowing your way around Cloverdale. However shortly after 11pm when the fireworks ended we were inundated with traffic coming along our quiet street. Cars were lined up way down the street, a huge traffic jam. Cars were driving down the no exit street alongside our house and then driving out again. Honking and yelling until well past midnight. I don't know what was up with so many cars. Our neighborhood is kind of a weird one that way, not set up for a lot of through traffic. No exit streets and if you go on long enough you end up in cowtown driving in circles. A lot of lost people trying to find a quick way out of Cloverdale. The unfortunate thing is most of them ended up turning back towards 60th Avenue, which I'm sure was jammed packed with wall to wall cars trying to get out of Cloverdale. Bad choice choosing our street as a get out town fast route.

Canada Day free pancake breakfast and raspberry social
Ah yes, never miss an opportunity for free pancakes!
Kraus Berry Farms in Aldergrove is one of my favorite places to buy fresh berries. We go there several times during the summer to buy freshly picked strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. We snack on them on the drive home and still manage to get home with many intact. Their berries are so big, sweet, and juicy. The Kraus farms also has a bakery selling pies and shortcake featuring their berries and sell preserves. They also serve sandwiches and milkshakes. And if you like farm animals, there is a petting zoo to visit.
On July 1 from 9am to 1pm Kraus Berry Barms is celebrating Canada Day with a free pancake breakfast served with their own berry syrup. They're located at 6179 - 248th Street.
And when you're finished at Kraus's farm, head south on 248th Street to the Otter Coop located just south of the Fraser Highway. Between noon and 3pm on Canada Day they're holding a strawberry/raspberry social featuring raspberry shortcake and there will be live music.
Time it right and you can fit in both activities.
And then don't forget to come back to Cloverdale for the Canada Day celebrations at the Millenium Park located at the corner of 64th Avenue and 176th Street. Traffic in that area is going to be a mess after the 10pm fireworks show is finished. If you can walk or take transit that's the best plan. 100,000 people showed up last year and parking is at a premium.
