Stinging Nettles

When I was growing up in Cloverdale we had a lot of bushes to play in. Stinging nettles grow abundantly all over the province and the ditches and woods around Cloverdale were full of them. By 5 years old I knew what a stinging nettle was and to avoid them. Live and learn. Stinging nettles form bumps on the skin that itch and sting for quite some time if you come in contact with them.

Tonight we were out at the farm with a friend in his mid-30's. He returned to his car to get the camera and when he rejoined us he said he touched a plant and now has hives and they hurt. I took a look at his arms and those hives looked like he'd been in contact with stinging nettles. I spotted some nearby and pointed to them and he said that was the plant.

What I can't figure out is how he got this far along in life without ever coming in contact with a stinging nettle or knowing what they are.
